Mitel Survey Finds Voice Virtual Solutions Emerging as a Key Technology for 2010

More than 90 percent of respondents believe virtual voice solutions will improve how they run their business

OTTAWA, Ontario – February 19, 2010 – The move toward voice virtual solutions in the data center appears to be emerging as a key technology trend for 2010, according to survey results taken by Mitel® during the Series X -- Voice Virtualization web event. Survey respondents, which included IT managers, directors, and technicians, agreed that the ability to virtualize voice in the data center is compelling; with more than 90 percent of respondents believing Mitel Virtual Solutions will improve the way they run their business.

Furthermore, 13.9 percent would classify themselves as general technology innovators, while 39.4 percent would classify themselves as early adoptors of technology. More than 65 percent of respondents answered that they or their customer already run (54.1 percent) VMware virtualization or are planning to run VMware virtualization in 2010 (12.4 percent).

Gartner provided its outlook on the server virtualization market during the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in October 2009. According to the outlook, only 16 percent of workloads are running in virtual machines today, but Gartner predicts this to rise to around 50 percent of x86 architecture server workloads by the end of 2012, representing approximately 58 million deployed machines. Gartner also said that the fastest growing market for virtual machines is the small business sector. "We can see from these results that virtual solutions, and specifically voice virtualization, is an important trend for data center managers," said Stephen Beamish, vice-president of marketing and business development for Mitel. "We're seeing the benefits of voice virtual solutions extended to not only the enterprise but to a number of customers in the small- and medium-sized markets as well. Currently, we have customers with deployments ranging from 30 to 2,000 users—a strong indicator of the flexibility and scalability of voice virtualization technology."

The ability to consolidate voice applications alongside non-voice business applications in the datacenter has the potential for: capital savings due to the significant reduction in server hardware and real estate; operational savings with the reduction in power and server provisioning costs; and productivity improvements and resource efficiencies in datacenter management and risk mitigation for business continuity and disaster recovery plans.

"The benefits we are capturing from Mitel Virtual Solutions are a reduced maintenance load on our technical support staff, and because we have our voice applications running in the same virtual environment with all of our data, I do not have to duplicate efforts in maintaining the provision of our voice services. That in turn is linked to a significant reduction in our power and utility costs within our data center," said Rob Neil, head of ICT and customer services, Ashford Borough Council, in the UK. "We are also moving forward a quicker deployment time for voice over IP as we begin to move the entire organization towards IP communications. It took us about 20 minutes to provision a brand new instance of Virtual MCD and migrate 30 or 40 users over."

The Series X -- Voice Virtualization web event was presented by Mitel and VMware on February 17, 2010.  The event had more than 1,300 registrants.
